Bali Girls & Bali Boys

Bali’s clubs and bars are a great place to meet people. An exciting mix of locals and tourists from around the world head to the discos and clubs to mix and mingle, making it easy to find a friend for the evening or something more long-term.

Visitors looking for company don’t need to worry. Wherever you go in Sanur, Kerobokan, Seminyak, Legian and the Kuta area, there are many other single travelers who are looking to meet new people – day and night.

In Bali’s discos, clubs, bars and even pubs you’ll meet many young girls, “kupu kupu malam” (“night butterflies” or working girls) and young boys who compete with the females.

All taxi drivers, security guards, street vendors will know the more “popular” karaoke bars and massage parlours in Kuta, Legian and Denpasar, along with the various “Houses of ill Repute” in narrow back lanes. These helpful people want to share their knowledge, whether you want to know or not.

Anything you might be tempted to experience or consume is available. A silent but direct “massage?, young girls?, marihuana?” slips the tongue of many you might pass, while walking the streets of Kuta, Legian or Seminyak.

Prostitution
Travelers should keep in mind that prostitution is a big business in Bali, and that what may seem like innocent fun can sometimes turn into hassling or a demand for cash. Luckily, things are quite direct, so cautious visitors will easily be able to tell what they are getting themselves into in any situation. Note “Prostitution is illegal in Bali”, however, like in many countries, everyone turns a blind eye, and prostitution is not necessarily a tourism related phenomena. Indonesian men who can afford it like to go to massage places regularly, asking for a massage with what they call: “Happy End”.

People don’t get killed here in the red light district, Bali is not Mexico City, but some tourists wake up without their wallet or watches after their adventures, or with a transmitted disease that is difficult to get rid off and more difficult to explain once they are home.

The South of the island is where it’s all Happening

Bali nightlife is diverse, yet certain types of crowds, venues, and music are found more in specific areas. Kuta tends to pull in a younger, wilder crowd with megaclubs, ultra-cheap drinks, and a musical focus on reggae, top 40, R&B, and mainstream dance music, while Seminyak typically attracts a hipper, more refined group of clubbers.

Here, also most expatriates hang out. The focus is on beautiful venues with top of the line sound systems and international DJs playing house, techno, dubstep, and other cutting edge sounds. Drinks are of a higher quality, often made by the most skilled bartenders with imported ingredients. Make no mistake though, Seminyak’s clubs can get as wild as they come.

New hot spots often pop up and then shut down as soon as they get popular. Some of Bali’s clubs are rowdy and wild, some are hip and contemporary, and other more elegant and sophisticated. These can all be sampled in one night by simply grabbing a taxi and club-hopping.

Some mega clubs have made things easier for those who don’t want to travel by offering restaurants, bars, and multiple dance floors with different music styles, all under one roof.

Live music is available in Kuta, Sanur, and Denpasar, and tends to draw also a local crowd. Cover bands are common, as is karaoke, and the scene is more about drinking and meeting someone new than all-night dancing. When all of the clubs and bars shut down, clubbers can keep going at a number of afterhours spots or at one of the late-night restaurants or street food centers that cater to the night owl. Alternatively they may prepare for bed.

Getting Ready for the Night

Every night of the week, visitors and local residents hit Bali’s many pubs, clubs, and beachside bars. Low-key spots, with affordable drinks let you unwind and make new friends, while upscale bars and pubs attract you with delicious cocktails, imported beers, fantastic food, and world-class musical entertainment. Not keen on dressing up for the night and want to stay in your shorts and t-shirt? No worries. Bali will have a spot where you’re welcome. Want to get dressed up in your fancy gear and step out to be seen? Then you’ll feel right at home here in Bali. The island offers a wide range of nightlife experiences for visitors of all type.

Bali Loves the Night

Bali has long been a center for clubbing and going out at night. Nearly half a century ago, the island was a popular stop for hippies and surfers, and its relaxed and tolerant culture has allowed a thriving party scene to grow over the decades. Its closeness to Australia, Japan, Singapore, and other Asian centers has meant that today, Bali is a world-class destination for nightlife.

Bali has no enforced opening and closing times for clubs and discos allowing them to stay open till late, with the music sometimes still playing at sunrise. Although the real parties and action happens after midnight, going out might start early, with happy hours available in many restaurants, bars, and clubs, and sunset drinks are a daily pastime, whether in a luxurious beachside lounge in Seminyak or on a bench by the waves in Kuta.

Bali’s crime rate is low. Bali is not Brasil, Mexico, or L.A. – But crime does indeed exist. There is theft, murder and rape like in any other country in the world. These crimes are committed by Balinese, Javanese, Australians and people from many other countries. And law enforcement is not what one would like to see and expect. Money rules, and money talks everywhere, where alcohol, drugs and prititution create this crazy mixture that attracts a certain crowd (Kuta).

Girls going out alone are generally safe, but it’s always good to be alert and to set clear boundarieswhen guys with a few Bintang beers too much feel encouraged by reading the signs wrongly. Although this happens rarely, Balinese youngsters can also get pushy at times around Kuta area very late at night.

Kuta is a special place in many ways, always has been. It is simply the epicentre of drugs and prostitution. Hundreds of thousands of Australians come to Bali every year to party hard. Real hard. The clubs, bars, the Bali girls, the drug market and even the security guards in this area are contolled by a mafia, that is not to play with.

So, although it is tempting to NOT behave like one would at home, it is advisable to keep some common sense running.

Note: Showing off abs while walking around without shirts might be a cool thing to do for some guys, but it’s odd and not really appreciated.

Bali’s South

South Bali is the island’s busiest and most developed area, and also the most popular with tourists. This is for good reason. It includes the busy spots Kuta, Legian, and Seminyak, the calmer areas of Canggu, Sanur and Nusa Dua, and the surf-oriented Bukit peninsula.
The south is also where Bali’s airport Ngurah Rai is located.

Visitors interested in the cultural aspects of Bali will find plenty to like in Ubud which is located more in the centre of Bali, or you can visit the beautiful temples at Tanah Lot and Uluwatu or get inspired by the traditional arts of Sanur.

If you are interested in shopping, South Bali offers thousands of shops, with everything from souvenirs to fashionable clothing and jewelry available at very low prices. Seminyak in general is more “boutique” than Kuta or Legian, which goes for restaurants, clubs, villas, resorts and shops alike.

South Bali is also the best place for dining and nightlife. Local food from all over the Indonesian archipelago awaits you, as well as fusion and international cuisine made by Bali’s many cutting-edge chefs. You can enjoy the freshest seafood on the beach at Jimbaran or rub shoulders with the fun seeking crowds in Kuta and Legian.

Sunsets are the time when everyone heads to the beach for a drink, and the night goes from there. Wild beach parties, upscale nightclubs, and plenty of venues with live music can be found all over South Bali, and most places stay open late.

Accommodation is available at all levels in the South Bali region, from the most basic backpacker rooms with a bed and a fan for only a few dollars, to five-star hotels, resorts, and private, fully-staffedbeachfront villas. Whatever your budget, you are certain to find the right room for you. The majority of Bali’s most beautiful beaches are in the south, with a wide variety of different options for sun worshipers, and some of the world’s best waves for surfing can be found here, suiting all levels of surfer, from absolute beginner to seasoned pro.

Seasons and Temperaturs on Bali

Dry Season is High Season

Dry season is between the months of April and September. Bali receives the most visitors during July and August. Temperatures are pretty steady all your round though. During Bali’s dry season beaches are generally clean and Bali shows its pretty side. One can still expect occasional rainfall though and sometimes even the locals are surprised how dry a week during rainy season can be and the other way around. Have a llok at the chart below and check out temperature, no. of days with rain etc in Denpasar, which is located in the south.

Wet Season

During rainy season which is typically from October to March Bali becomes more quiet. The sea is rougher, the beaches in the south can be quite dirty due to debris washed onto the shore. Winds are stronger at the coastlines, the water currents pick up and it can rain in buckets. Although usually the rain stops after a few hours and the sun shines again. A lot of the times it rains during the night and days are o.k. Very rarely you have a few days when it rains continuously.

Central Bali and the Mountains

Bali’s central mountain area is typically cooler and also more rainy than the lower coastal areas. Especially at night temperatures can drop significantly in the highlands near the volcanoes. Gunung Agung is for example 3031m high! Also the region around Ubud is a slightly cooler and has a bit more rain than the south of Bali (Kuta, Legian, Seminyak, Denpasar, Sanur, Bukit Pennsula, Pecatu), which makes it rather pleasant.

General

Bali’s is located very near to the equator, therefore its warm, tropical climate makes it a huge draw for tourists. Average year-round temperature stands at around 26-27°C with a humidity level of about 85%. Water temperatures are always pleasant. The two seasons are not clear cut and fully predictable. Christmas and New Year is clearly high or peak season on Bali and tourists come from all over the world to enjoy the beaches, the surfing, diving, the restaurants, the club, the spas and everything else Bali has to offer – although it is technically “rainy season”. One can do everything during wet season but maybe climb he volcanoes and trekking in the highlands.

Best Time to Travel to Bali

High season is during the months of July and August. However best time to come to Bali is May, June and September, just before and just after high season. It’s still dry season, it’s less humid, and room prices can be 30-50% cheaper than during high season. Many shops offer sales and promotions, restaurants are less crowded in those mid-season months, and in general Bali is a bit more relaxed. October is not too bad either, still much less rain than November (usually).

It’s also the best time for water sport activities  such as scuba diving, surfing, snorkeling, etc. Waters are clear, crowd not too bad etc. Also major attractions such as the family parks and fun things to do (Bali Zoo, Bali Bird Park, Marine & Safari Park, Waterbom, White Water Rafting, Monkey Forest, etc) have less visitors which can make the experience far more enjoyable.  And not to forget, in general the traffic and hustle  bustle on the roads is more bearable. Especially in Kuta, Legian and sometimes even Seminyak the narrow streets are packed during certain times in the day with cars and motorcycles. Some tourists love it that way and could not imagine a holiday otherwise, but if you like it more quiet, then Kuta and Legian during high season might not the your best choice.

Tumpek Landep on December 12, 2015

Tumpek Landep is a holy day that is dedicated to the blessings of metal items, from heirloom kris daggers to various other metal objects such as modern machinery, automobuiles and such; all towards their better use in daily life. On this day you’ll see cars and motorcycles decorated with intricate stitched-leaf ornaments called ‘sampian’ roaming the streets in Bali.

Umat Hindu merayakan rerahinan Tumpek Landep, Sabtu Kliwon Wuku Landep. Pada Tumpek Landep, umat Hindu memuja Ida Sang Hyang Widhi dalam prebawa-nya sebagai Sang Hyang Pasupati yang telah menganugerahkan kecerdasan atau ketajaman pikiran sehingga mampu menciptakan teknologi atau benda-benda yang dapat mempermudah dan memperlancar hidup, seperti sepeda motor, mobil, mesin, komputer (laptop) dan sebagainya. Tetapi dalam konteks itu umat bukanlah menyembah mobil, komputer, tetapi memohon kepada Ida Sang Hyang Pasupati agar benda-benda tersebut betul-betul dapat berguna bagi kehidupan manusia.

Landep dalam Tumpek Landep memiliki pengertian lancip. Secara harfiah diartikan senjata tajam seperti tombak dan keris. Benda-benda tersebut dulunya difungsikan sebagai senjata hidup untuk menegakkan kebenaran. Secara sekala, benda-benda tersebut diupacarai dalam Tumpek Landep.

Namun dalam konteks kekinian, senjata lancip itu sudah meluas. Tak hanya keris dan tombak, juga benda-benda hasil cipta karsa manusia yang dapat mempermudah hidup seperti sepeda motor, mobil, mesin, komputer dan sebagainya. Benda-benda itulah yang diupacarai. Namun harus disadari, dalam konteks itu umat bukanlah menyembah benda-benda teknologi, tetapi umat memohon kepada Ida Sang Hyang Widi dalam prebawa-nya sebagai Sang Hyang Pasupati yang telah menganugerahkan kekuatan pada benda tersebut sehingga betul-betul mempermudah hidup.

Dalam pengertian, bahwa umat patut bersyukur kepada Tuhan karena telah diberikan kemampuan atau ketajaman pikiran sehingga mampu menciptakan aneka benda atau teknologi yang dapat mempermudah hidup.

Sementara dalam kaitan dengan buana alit (diri manusia), Tumpek Landep itu sesungguhnya momentum untuk selalu menajamkan pikiran (landeping idep), menajamkan perkataan (landeping wak) dan menajamkan perbuatan (landeping kaya). Ketiga unsur Tri Kaya Parisuda tersebut perlu lebih dipertajam agar berguna bagi diri sendiri dan orang lain. Buah pikiran perlu dipertajam untuk kepentingan umat manusia, demikian pula perbuatan dan perkataan yang dapat menentramkan pikiran dan batin orang lain.

Pikiran kita mesti selalu diasah agar mengalami ketajaman. Ilmu pengetahuanlah alat untuk menajamkan pikiran. Komputer yang diciptakan untuk mempertajam pikiran, hendaknya dimanfaatkan dengan
baik. Internet mesti digunakan untuk mengakses informasi sehingga wawasan dan kecerdasan bertambah, bukan untuk mengunduh yang lain-lain.

Jadi Tumpek Landep memiliki nilai filosofi agar umat selalu menajamkan pikiran. Setiap enam bulan sekali umat diingatkan melakukan evaluasi apakah pikiran sudah selalu dijernihkan atau diasah agar tajam? Sebab, dengan pikiran yang tajam, umat menjadi lebih cerdas, lebih jernih melakukan analisa, lebih tepat menentukan keputusan dan sebagainya.

Lewat perayaan Tumpek Landep itu umat diingatkan agar selalu menggunakan pikiran yang tajam sebagai tali kendali kehidupan. Misalnya, ketika umat memerlukan sarana untuk memudahkan hidup, seperti mobil, sepeda motor dan sebagainya, pikiran yang tajam itu mesti dijadikan kendali. Keinginan mesti mampu dikendalikan oleh pikiran. Dengan demikian keinginan memiliki benda-benda itu tidak berdasarkan atas gengsi, tetapi betul-betul berfungsi untuk menguatkan hidup sehingga betul-betul tepat guna.
